Seems like there is a thorn in the rose of Miley Cyrus’ hit song, “Flowers.”
The singer is being sued for copyright infringement by Tempo Music Investments, a company claiming it owns a share of the copyright for Bruno’s song “When I Was Your Man.”In the lawsuit, which does seem a bit sketchy, Tempo Music claims there musical similarities between Miley’s “Flowers” and Bruno’s “When I Was Your Man.”Tempo Music dug deep into the melody, harmony and chorus in “Flowers” and says it is “striking similarities” to the verse in “When I Was Your Man.” They are also claiming that “Flowers” copies the chord progressions and mirrors some of the lyrics too.And talk about chutzpah! Tempo Music wants her to be barred from distributing or performing “Flowers.”Bruno Mars is NOT part of this lawsuit. Tempo Music Investments, owns a share of the copyright in Mars’ 2013 hit,As People Magazine reported, in a lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles court on Monday, Sept. 16, Tempo Music Investments — which owns a share of the copyright in Mars’ hit after it acquired songwriter Philip Lawrence’s music catalog — alleges that many “recognized the striking similarities” between the two songs upon the release of “Flowers.”
Tempo Music Investments also lists “Flowers” songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack — who wrote the track with Cyrus — among multiple defendants, along with Sony Music Publishing and Apple, in the suit.
Reps for either Cyrus or Mars were unavailable but this does seem like quite the reach. But it is making headlines. The suit wants monetary damages too though not disclosed. But “Flowers” will continue to bloom and be Cyrus’ most successful song. As we know, flowers bring sales and smiles.
