Meet the Hydrangea That Lasts 100 Days

A new hydrangea named “Groundbreaker” is certainly ground breaking.
Meet Hydrangea Groundbreaker® Blush™ which is the world’s first true ground cover hydrangea. Among its many positive traits, it also lasts 100 days in the garden. In pale shades of pinks and whites, it adds pop and delight to any garden since the flowers are so very abundant. The color waves also mesh with the seasons.
Amazing for borders or areas with open dirt that need to be filled, the ‘Groundbreaker’ was introduced by Dutch hydrangea breeder Living Creations and spearheaded by sixth-generation nurseryman Alex Schoemaker.
This is such a wonderful addition any garden. It is worth it to pay attention to what flower wins prestigious shows since their testing is so vigorous.
AWARDS IT HAS WON
Groundbreaker made its public debut in Holland at the Plantarium show, one of the biggest European trade shows, in August 2024, where it scooped a gold medal. Supplier Plantline then introduced ‘Groundbreaker’ to UK audiences in September 2024 at the Four Oaks Trade Show in Cheshire.
This month it also sparked attention when introduced as a star plant at the Chelsea Flower Show 2025. I think this hydrangea will be a big hit. Because what we really want in the garden is something that will take up space. Hydrangeas are flowers that deliver in size and heft. But the adored varieties are ones like Incrediball but those are large upstanding panicle hydrangeas. This is truly low to the ground and amplifies any entrance or pathway.
GROWING DETAILS
Hydrangea, Groundbreaker® BlushTM thrives in a well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or part shade, especially with 6-8 hours of sun. Water regularly, especially in dry periods, to establish strong roots. Prune in early spring to encourage fresh growth and abundant flowering.
This low maintenance plant naturally forms a neat, spreading mound and is perfect for covering large areas but is also ideal for planting in pots, window boxes and containers, making it a most versatile plant for any size of garden. Apply mulch to retain moisture and protect roots. Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring for optimal growth. Hardy and resilient, ‘Groundbreaker’ is perfect for adding elegance to any garden border with minimal effort.
This easy to maintain hydrangea, is also bred to cope well with climate change, especially colder winters and hotter summer months. Its ground covering habit, means it retains moist whilst also providing a natural habitat for wildlife to benefit from.
