Wearing a Flower for Good Luck? Worked for This Runner

Spread the love

RIP Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins took up running after her 100th birthday, setting two world records in the 100-meter dash and inspiring the elderly and others to exercise for happiness and health.

Her signature was wearing a flower behind her ear. In fact, the Louisiana elementary teacher was nicknamed “Hurricane” because of her speed, but said she wished she was actually called “the flower lady.”

Not only because she wore a flower behind her ear, but gardening she felt was a source of happiness and way to live longer. She had 75 native plants in her garden and loved bonsai trees too. Her home state flower, the magnolia, was always special to her as well. Wearing a flower was her signature and people looked for it every time she ran.

Always active, she said she knew she was quick because she would have to run to the house often from her garden. “People are calling me and would run to get the phone,” she remarked.

Her advice for longevity? “Look for those magic moments –  “I care about flowers and birds, sunrises, and sunsets. I’ve seen so many wonderful things in my life.”

Julia Hawkins died at 108 surrounded by flowers and loved ones.
